Waiting for THE KILLER with ASSASSINS

Patience for a wide theatrical release is in short supply.

Patience for a wide theatrical release is in short supply.

When David Fincher releases a new film... we grab the ethernet cable. In this episode about the battle for artistic compression our guest is David Giannini of OFF SCREEN DEATH and A PODCAST DIRECTED BY. As that latter show last produced a series of episodes on Mr. Fincher's filmography we thought it prudent to bring Dave back... to discuss Richard Donner's ASSASSINS. And while the waiting game is different in tone from new release THE KILLER, both provide a good amount of laughs. But only one has a sweaty Antonio Banderas. Enjoy!

After BARBIE We Play w/ TOYS at the SOBER CINEMA

Joan Cusack was the Robot Barbie ahead of her time.

Joan Cusack was the Robot Barbie ahead of her time.

I don't know if that's a spoiler because it was honestly hard to follow Barry Levinson's fever dream passion project TOYS. We debate the creep factor of many things in this film:

  • The use of Robin Williams childlike nature YET AGAIN used as a means of courtship. This time THE PRINCESS BRIDE herself, Robin Wright, is the unfortunate love interest.
  • LL COOL J as The Prodigal Son and ALSO The Master of Disguise (shoutout to Dana Carvey.)
  • And finally... the white privilege of a robot's chosen diet.

Using DEAD RECKONING to Navigate the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE Franchise

Web Bist of TRILOGY IN THEORY co-pilots all for the love of Hayley Atwell.

Web Bist of TRILOGY IN THEORY co-pilots all for the love of Hayley Atwell.

But don't worry all you level-headed listeners... Vanessa Kirby also get a lot of love. As does the latest entry in the Christopher McQuarrie helmed entries to the Ethan Hunt saga which also doubles as yet another attempt to kill Tom Cruise. As the last remaining Hollywood showman will this film stand the test of time? In short, we don't care. This movie was a blast.

What one host does care about is settling scores with all the internet haters of John Woo's CLASSIC version and wants it on the record that his forty plus watches of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 2 were not in vain.

We hope you join us by supporting our Patreon Movie Book Club episodes and not deciding to read!

Before DEAD RECKONING We Need A FEW GOOD MEN

A return to the SOBER CINEMA is in order for The Savior of Cinema.

A return to the SOBER CINEMA is in order for The Savior of Cinema.

My co-hosts in the past tense only (it's better for present self that way) Jairo and Jared return to the heat check of Rob Reiner's run on film with A FEW GOOD MEN. Among the topics of interest as we attempt to find a new take on this classic:

  • The "good vibes only" nature of a Miami sports fan. Any losses go in the memory hole.
  • A spirited defense on the decisions of Jack Nicholson in this film.
  • Is this the least that Tom Cruise had to exert himself in the history of his roles playing the hero?

All of this as we look forward to Mr. Cruise coming back to save the theatrical box-office once again with next week's MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - DEAD RECKONING PART ONE! Even the title reeks of blessed excess.

JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 and Keanu as the Ageless Action Star

An international podcast superstar joins the show to praise a superstar who'd never podcast.

However our guest is not ageless.

We here at PROJECTING FILM like to take our (okay, my) shot at our guests in a bold header... if not a bold way. Also NOT BOLD is our decision to analyze Keanu Reeves taking over the modern action genre with the latest release of JOHN WICK: CHAPTER FOUR. To do that welcome Jairo of SOBER CINEMA as he does his best to not sound to jealous of the immortal Mr. Reeves and some other podcasts we feature on the subject.

We remain jealous and small-minded men though. Don't worry. Nothing changes!

CALVARY for St. Patrick's Day w/ JD Duran of INSESSION FILM

Have a drink and/or go to church while listening to this one.

It was either this or LEAP YEAR.

That's the type of research department we have here at PROJECTING FILM. Mainly listicles on St. Patrick's Day movies. Next time, Amy Adams. Next time.

For now we present a conversation on guilt, shame and the Catholic Church. Thus... we are encouraging drinking on this fine holiday. And if that wasn't enough to cause one to drink... we have JD DURAN of INSESSION FILM on as a guest!

Forty Years of SCREAMs at THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW

The glory days of mean girls began on January 21, 1983.

We prepare for SCREAM by debating the virtue of old movies.

And by virtue we mean watching attractive women pull cruel pranks on the elderly while allowing NOTHING to get in the way of the party at the sorority house.

Including a drive-by waterbed demolition.

Or the curiosity of frat bros when it comes to pull lights.

NOTHING will stop this episode. Except when it comes to people actually clicking play. That has proven to be an effective method of stopping the shenanigans of the hosts over at SOBER CINEMA.

TOP GUN MAVERICK: Best Picture Nominee and Better than the Original?

We are a fan of anything that adds Miles Teller to the mix.

Really this is just an excuse to revisit the beach volleyball scene again.

Peter Veunnasack and Michael Denniston have over a hundred episodes of watching essentially the same movie over again on ORIGINAL REMAKE. But when it's Tom Cruise... they don't complain. Too much. They are just glad that the critical community has embraced repeating one's self (a podcaster's bread and butter) in acknowledging TOP GUN: MAVERICK as the savior of cinema and one of the ten best pictures of 2022. But is it better than the original?

Spoiler: yes.

Second spoiler: Miles Teller is in this one.

Enjoy!

Will COCAINE BEAR Have THE EDGE?

This podcast is a big bear, man.

David Mamet's two guys and a bear movie finally hits podcast syndication.

In a conversation that you may have heard before (but hopefully and LIKELY NOT) your favorite podcast host revisits his own odd fascination with bears on film... but isn't that excited for COCAINE BEAR. To bring on even more negative energy Dave Giannini of OFF SCREEN DEATH joins the show to express an equal amount of doubt for what probably will be the new SNAKES ON A PLANE. For good or bad.

However Anthony Hopkins brought the appropriate big bear energy back in 1997 for THE EDGE and Chris Maynard of FOLLOWING FILMS and Shane Conner admit to rewatching this film enough to feel shame. As all should.

30 Years of Richard Gere Twins in SOMMERSBY at the SOBER CINEMA

On February 5, 1993 Jodie Foster had seconds.

Thirty years of Bill Pullman losing to The Gere... AGAIN.

For SOMMERSBY which is a film about willful ignorance we interrogate each other on our knowledge of this film and just how handsome we are willing to admit that Richard Gere is.

That's it.

That's the episode.

Also apologies to Jodie Foster though she was a very lucky woman in the Civil War era South. Beyond the obvious reasons... she got lucky at least twice more. Alright, enough of these show notes. Check out more of the SOBER CINEMA at the links below:
